The St. Mary’s Rattlers exploded for 7 runs in the fourth inning to break open a 1-1 tie and beat Angelo State 9-1 in Game 7 of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Softball Championship Tournament Friday at St. Mary’s.

Liz Beyer’s fifth-inning home run game the Rattlers the eight-run lead they would need to end the game on the run rule. It was Beyer’s 20th homer of the season, and second in the regional tournament.

Beyer and senior Teri Moreno each had two hits, while Moreno drove in two runs for the Rattlers.

The Rattlers (46-9) racked up 12 hits and took advantage of three Rambelle errors to score in the fourth.

St. Mary’s freshman Brittany Brown gave up a solo home run to Andrea Payan in the second inning, then buckled down to hold a powerful Angelo State lineup to just two hits. She struck out four batters and improved her record to 14-4.

The Rattlers move into Game 10 of the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Saturday versus the winner of the Angelo State vs. Central Oklahoma game (Game 9 – 1 p.m. Saturday). If the Rattlers win that game, they will be regional champs and move on to the national finals tournament May 19-23 in Salem, Va.
