AUSTIN -St. Mary’s scored a clean sweep Tuesday as both the men’s and women’s golf teams captured Heartland Conference championships in Austin.

The St. Mary’s men’s golf team fought back from a two-shot first day deficit to win the 2004 Heartland Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by St. Edward’s University.

The Rattlers shot a three-round total of 875, besting St. Edward’s by seven strokes. UIW came in third with a score of 904.

Greg McAuley finished first in the tournament with a three-round total of 216. In Tuesday’s final round, McAuley torched the windy course for a score of 67.

Luke Antonelli, who led the field after the first day, finished third with a score of 218. Ryan Villareal scored a 224. K.C. Lim shot a 222, and Robert Meyers shot a 226.

The St. Mary’s University women’s team cruised to the Heartland Conference title by placing all five golfers in the top eight.

The Rattlers were never in danger as they beat their nearest competitor, Drury, 627 to 659. UIW finished third with a total of 720.

Marla Troester finished first in the tournament with a two-round total of 146. Nicole Wynn finished third with a total of 158, while Kathy Carvajal finished fourth with a total of 159. Liz Reid shot 164 to place sixth, and Chelsea Siler shot 170 to finish eighth.
