The St. Mary’s softball team, ranked eighth in the nation with a 29-7 record, continued its winning ways this past weekend, picking up five victories at the Southwestern Shootout in Weatherford, OK. Hosted March 20-22 by Southwestern Oklahoma State, the round-robin tournament paired teams from Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.

In their opening game on Friday, March 21, the Rattlers defeated Southern Colorado 3-0. All-American Kym Kling picked up her 14th win as the Rattlers score three runs off eight hits. In the second inning Liz Hunt dron Kristen Simmons home on a sacrifice fly to left field and Tiffini Craft’s RBI single allowed Jennifer Survant to score. The Rattlers scored again in the fifth when Pam Salinas scored during Kling’s 6-3 ground-out.

In their second game on Friday St. Mary’s drove in four runs off nine hits to defeat Oklahoma Christian 4-2. Amanda Bayless (11-3) held OCU to just four hits. The Rattlers scored three runs in the first thanks to Survant’s three-RBI double. Kristin Simmons scored the Rattler’s fourth run, coming home off Liz Hunt’s RBI double in the third inning.

The Rattlers then closed out Friday with another 4-2 victory, this time beating Cameron. Rattler Ace Kling picked up her second win of the day after holding the Aggies scoreless until the seventh as St. Mary’s scored four runs off eleven hits. Kristin Simmons’ 2-RBI homerun capped a four-run seventh inning for the Rattlers.

On Saturday, St. Mary’s defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 3-1 as Kling won again to improve to 16-2 on the year. The Rattlers connected for eight hits with Kling, Craft and Teri Moreno each recording RBIs.

The Rattlers finished their five game sweep of the Shootout with a 5-2 win over St. Gregory’s. St. Mary’s scored four runs in the third to take 4-0 lead and held on for the win. Simmons recorded three RBIs as Amanda Bayless (12-3) got the win, giving up only two hits.

St. Mary’s takes on Houston Baptist in Houston on Tuesday before hosting Southern Colorado on Friday.
