San Antonio – St. Mary’s fought until the bitter end Friday night, but it was Central Oklahoma’s volleyball team that walked away with the thrilling victory.

Overcoming a set deficit, UCO clipped the Rattlers 3-2, taking the fifth and final set, 15-13, in what could only be described as a hard-fought match at Bill Greehey Arena.

Stephanie Proske (Sr., La Grange, Texas) led the Rattlers with 13 kills, while Taylor Obermiller (Fr., San Antonio) had 12 and Mallory Moeller (Sr., Geronimo, Texas) and Kirsten Chapman (Sr., Jourdanton, Texas) posted 11 apiece.

Allie Murray (Jr., San Antonio) had 48 of the Rattlers’ 51 assists, while Victorria Martinez (Fr., Arlington, Texas) shined with 41 digs. Melissa Dahle (So., San Antonio) added 19 digs, while Murray and Kelsey Huber (Fr., San Antonio) added 18 and 14, respectively.

After dropping the first set 25-16, St. Mary’s bounced back to win the next two sets, both by the score of 25-22. But Central Oklahoma took the fourth set 25-17 and then took the decisive fifth set.

Bella Romera led UCO with a whopping 64 assists in the match.

St. Mary’s will return to the court on Saturday, when it hosts University of the Southwest in “Volley for a Cure,” its annual match that supports breast cancer awareness. The match will begin at 12 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
