SEGUIN, Texas – The St. Mary’s women’s tennis team came out ahead in its last regular match of the fall season at the Texas Lutheran Doc Skogman Invitational last weekend, with freshman Mia Villasenor winning the F singles championship and several other Rattlers advancing to the finals.

Villasenor is definitely earning her stripes as a new Rattler. She defeated Texas-Permian Basin’s Turner in the quarterfinals and went head on with Gonzalez from Our Lady of the Lake to win the semifinals 6-3, 6-1. Villasenor advanced to the finals and was up 6-4, 2-0 before Thaxton of USW retired due to injury, sealing the Rattlers’ lone championship for the invitational.

Angelique De Oliveira (Sr., Wattrelos, France) and Valentine Lambrechts (Jr., Belgium) were the Rattlers’ A singles squad, both advancing individually to the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the third-place match of the A singles, the two Rattlers had a St. Mary’s face-off as they competed against each other, with Lambrechts coming out ahead 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Denissia Gonzalez (Fr., Houston) represented St. Mary’s in B Singles competition, advancing to the finals, while Kelly Cooper (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) followed her lead in the C singles, also advancing to the finals. Elisha Bryant (Jr., Plano, Texas) wasn’t far behind, also seeing the finals match in the E singles.

De Oliveira and Lambrechts met up again as partners in the A doubles match and tag-teamed their way to the quarterfinals, but were unable to compete for the fifth-place spot due to weather conditions. Weather conditions also stumped Huong Huynh (Sr., Houston) and Erica Carmona (Sr., Converse, Texas) in the B doubles finals match, which stood at a tie, 2-2. The story was the same for Bryant and Anita Qureshi (So., San Antonio, Texas), who advanced to the semifinals for C doubles and were unable to compete in the finals.

With a slew of finals competitors and a championship, the Rattlers gear up for their spring season with a successful wrap-up of their fall season.
