San Antonio – Four St. Mary’s University Rattlers had 10 or more kills, but St. Edward’s University held off a strong challenge by the Rattlers for a 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21 victory in Heartland Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon at the Recreation and Convocation Center. In women’s soccer action, the Rattlers also fell to St. Edward’s, 3-0 at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

The match was tight in all four sets, with 34 ties and 19 lead changes, including 14 ties and five lead changes in the third set alone. In the fourth set, the Rattlers took a 14-11 lead, only to fall behind 17-15. Again the Rattlers came back and took an 18-17 lead. However, St. Edward’s finished the match with a 5-2 run to take the match.

Katelyn Kershner (Jr., San Antonio) led the Rattlers with 13 kills and 17 digs. Luisa Rodriguez (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) added 11 kills and 15 digs. Defensively, Stephanie Flores (Jr., San Antonio) had a team-best 19 digs.

With the loss, the Rattlers wrapped up the 2009 season with a 7-22 overall record and a 6-8 mark in Heartland Conference play. SEU improved to 21-10 and 12-2.

For the women’s soccer team, Mari Edwards (Fr., Apex, N.C.) kept the Rattlers in the game against the Hilltoppers. SEU took an early 1-0 lead when Brianna Hinnekamp found the net on a shot across the penalty area in the 17th minute. That would be all the scoring in the first half. In the second half, the Rattlers had their chance to tie the game when a penalty kick was called at the 49:32 mark. However, goalkeeper Claire Tilton stopped Sarah Linares’ (Sr., San Antonio) kick to preserve the shutout. Just 1:15 later, Kim Abbott headed a loose ball into the Rattler net to give the Hilltoppers a 2-0 lead.

With the loss, the Rattlers ended the 2009 season with a 4-14-1 overall record and a 4-8-0 mark in Heartland Conference play. SEU improved to 15-3-1, 10-2-0.
