San Antonio – The University of the Incarnate Word scored two goals in less than a six-minute stretch of the second half to rally past St. Mary’s University, 2-1, in women’s soccer action Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field. The Rattler volleyball team also fell in action Friday, dropping a 25-17, 20-20, 25-15, decision against Dallas Baptist at Bill Greehey Arena.

For the women’s soccer team, the loss was a disappointment as they led the 17th-ranked Cardinals for 71 minutes before falling late. In the 30th minute of the game Michelle Ornelas (Jr., Arlington) took a pass from Elizabeth Rubi (Fr., Fort Worth), turned, and launched a high, arcing shot that just was out of the reach of UIW goalkeeper Ashton Caffery. That goal gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead, which they would hold until the 72nd minute of the game.

The Cardinals struck quickly with Cassidy Ballantyne heading in a corner kick off the foot of Lauren Evans to tie the game at 1-1. Less than six minutes later the Cardinals took the lead. Rebekah Garza send a corner kick into the penalty area, the ball bounced twice and Keri Dawson then one-touched it in to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 1-10-1 overall and 0-5 in Heartland Conference play. UIW improved to 9-1, 5-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Sunday when they host Texas A&M International University at 1 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Soccer Field.

For the volleyball team, the loss was especially frustrating as the Rattlers had more attack errors than kills for the first time this season. Stephanie Crowell (Jr., The Woodlands) led the squad with six kills. St. Mary’s led in all three sets, but Dallas Baptist responded each time with a big scoring run to take the lead. In each game they pulled away late for the win. Lauren Secord led the Patriots with 14 kills.

With the loss the Rattlers fell to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in Heartland Conference play. DBU improved to 11-7, 5-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at 2 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
