San Antonio–Emily Hernandez scored the only goal of the game in the 81st minute, lifting 18th-ranked University of the Incarnate Word to a 1-0 win over St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference women’s soccer action Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Field.

The game was a toe-to-toe slugfest for 80 minutes, with few strong scoring opportunities for either team. Emilie Snelson (So., Fairview, Texas) nearly gave the Rattlers the lead in the 65th minute when she dribbled through the Cardinal defense and sent a shot into the right post, just inches away from the go-ahead goal.

The scoreless tie finally was broken when Hernandez received a pass from Sarah Hernandez and sent a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for the only score of the game.

Mari Edwards (Fr., Apex, N.C.) helped to keep the Rattlers in the game, making seven saves in goal for St. Mary’s.

With the loss, St. Mary’s is now 1-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in Heartland Conference play this season. UIW improved to 10-1-1 and 5-0-0. The Rattlers will return to action on Sunday when they host Texas A&M International University at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Field.
