LAREDO, Texas – Long shots and one just outside the reach of the Rattlers’ gloves were the downfall for St. Mary’s Wednesday night, as Texas A&M International shut out the Rattlers 4-0 in the first conference game of the season.

The first taste of Heartland Conference play proved to be well-aimed competition for the Rattlers (1-2, 0-1 in conference), as the Dustdevils (1-1, 1-0 in conference) were able to find looks from far-out distances, connecting on three goals from long range, including one from 25 yards out.

The Rattlers didn’t succumb to their first conference defeat, however. St. Mary’s outshot Texas A&M International University 15-12 Wednesday and equaled its opponent’s shots on goal with six. Leah Snelson (Jr., Dallas) charged for half of the Rattlers’ shots on goal with three, while Jamey Coronado (Jr., San Antonio), Sam Lara (Fr., San Antonio) and Ronika Cavazos (Jr., Corpus Christi, Texas) each had one apiece.

The Dustdevils were nearly held scoreless in the first half but were able to capitalize 15 minutes before halftime in their first of far-out sinkers, with a long-range strike into the top-left corner from Sol Medina. The Dustdevils struck again 15 minutes into the second half with a header from 12 feet out that scored over keeper Paola Ostos’ (Jr., El Paso, Texas) fingers. The last two goals of the game came two minutes apart, first starting at the 75:00 mark with a 25-yard bomb followed by a 22-yard goal to end the game, 4-0.

The Rattlers will continue to work to transform saves into goals as they stay on the road to play Texas Southern University in Houston at 1 p.m. Sunday.
