The St. Mary’s women’s golf team will be the top seed in the West Regional of the 2003 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship. The Rattlers are seeded first among six teams competing in the regional, May 6-7, at the Muskogee (Okla.) Country Club. 24 teams and 12 individuals are competing in a total of four regional for eight team and eight individual spots in the championship finals, May 14-17, at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Competing for the Rattlers in the West Regional will be the squad’s top five: Senior Jillian Wyne, junior Chelsea Siler, sophomores Cathy Carvajal and Nicole Wyne and freshman Kate Meyer.

Each of the four regionals will consist of both teams and individual competition conducted concurrently. All participants will compete throughout the 56 holes of competition. The top two teams along with the top two individuals not with a team, from each regional, will advance to the championships.

In the team competition, the low four scores for each team will count in each day’s total score. The number of participants allowed at the finals is 48.

In last year’s championships, the Florida Southern College Lady Mocs set a new tournament record by winning their third straight national title by 74 strokes. The Lady Mocs crushed the competition with a record low score of 1,234 for the four-round tournament at The Meadows Golf Club at Grand Valley State University. Florida Southern took the win by taking the top three individual positions and tying for fourth place as well. Sophomore Jana Peterkova carded a final round of six-over-par 80 to win the individual title with a 14-over-par 306.

Rattlers ranked in D-II Top Ten
The Rattlers are rated seventh in Division II by Golfstat.com’s statistical rankings. The Rattlers success in what is their third year as a program — and only the second year fielding a full team — is nothing but remarkable. The team won four of its five tournaments last fall and two of five this spring. In those ten tournaments the Rattlers finishe behind a D-II squad only once. Their only loss in the fall was a the Northeastern State University Women’s Golf Classic was to NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma City University. They trailed three Division I teams at the UT-Pan American Bronc Intercollegiate Classic in February, trailed two D-I teams at the Shamrock Intercollegiate in March, and came second behind Northern Colorado, a fellow D-II top-ten squad, at the Bear Spring Invitation in April.

Team leader Jillian Wyne, a senior from Calgary, Alberta, is the highest ranked women’s golfer in Division II according to Golfstat.com’s Golfstat Cup rankings. As of April 23, Wyne was ranked first in D-II and 128th across all divisions with an adjusted average just 4.627 strokes behind the national leader, Katherine Hull of D-I Pepperdine. The next-best D-II golfer, Charlotte Campbell of Rollins is ranked 164th overall (+5.226). Wyne has five first-place finishes in the 2002-2003 season, along with four second-place finishes and one third-place finish.

Other standouts on the Rattler squad include Wyne’s sister Nicole Wyne and top frosh Kate Meyer. Nicole Wyne has finished second twice, third three-times and eighth once in the Rattlers’ ten tournaments in 2002-2003 while Meyer has one victory along with two second, one third, one seventh and two tenth-place finishes this school year. The Wyne sisters were recently profiled by their hometown newspaper, the Calgary Sun (Original Story @ Calgary Sun Web site posted 4/22/2003)

The Rattler women have an adjusted scoring average of 80.20. As of April 24, the Rattlers are third in the nation in Par 3 scoring, eighth in Par 4 scoring, sixth in Par 5 scoring and fourth in subpar strokes per round. In the invdidual statistics, Jillian Wyne is second in Par 4 scoring, third in Par 5 scoring and first in subpar strokes per round. Led by Meyer, the Rattlers’ freshman are ranked as the fourth best frosh squad in D-II.
