San Antonio – A cold front moved in and the winds picked up, yet the St. Mary’s women’s golf team just kept plugging along Tuesday.

Despite playing conditions worsening from Monday’s opening round, the Lady Rattlers moved up the leader board to finish in 12th place in the Lady Rattler-Round Up at the Pecan Valley Golf Club.

Led by Cami Furgeson’s final-round 85, St. Mary’s was one of only two teams to post a better score in the final round than in the opening round.

St. Edward’s won the tournament, beating runner-up Tarleton State by 14 strokes. Hilltoppers golfer Walls Spears took the individual crown after shooting a 6-over-par 78 Tuesday for a two-round total of 149.

“I think overall the whole field really competed today,” St. Mary’s coach Wes Skidmore said. “It was a change of weather from hardly any wind and 77 degrees to maybe, with the wind chill factor, about 50. But the girls hung in there and competed well. They improved.”

St. Mary’s entered the final round in 13th place.

Alejandra Cantu (Jr., Mission, Texas) finished as the Lady Rattlers’ top performer, shooting 90 in the final round for a two-round total of 174. She finished 47th in the individual standings.

Furgeson (So., Newcastle, Calif.) finished in a tie for 48th with a score of 176.

“Cami played well today,” Skidmore said. “She putted well today and made some good choices. It was a good round for her under the conditions. We were proud of what she did.”
