San Antonio – Ursula Perez placed second individually, helping the St. Mary’s University women’s golf team to a second place finish at the Northeastern State University Golf Classic, Tuesday at the Cherry Springs Golf Club. The men’s team placed fifth at the highly competitive Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate, played at the Diamondback Golf Club.

Perez (Jr., San Antonio) fired a two-round total of 152, including a first-round 73 to finish in second place, nine strokes behind Whitney McAteer of Northeastern State University and four strokes ahead of Liz Cagle of Northeastern State. The first round 73 was a career best for Perez and tied for the 10th lowest round in school history.

Alejandra Cantu (So., Mission) placed eighth with a 170, Cami Ferguson (Fr., Newcastle, Calif.) fired a 175 to place 14th in her first collegiate tournament, while Erika Patterson (So., San Antonio) placed 22nd with a 182.

In the team standings, Northeastern State had four of the top five individuals to take team honors with a 623. St. Mary’s was second with a 679, the University of the Incarnate Word was third with a 707, Fort Hayes State University finished fourth with a 708 and Oklahoma Baptist University placed fifth with a 715.

The Rattlers will return to action on Monday, September 28, when they travel to Canyon, to compete in the Lady Buff Classic.

For the men, Jeff Rein (Jr., Garden Ridge) finished strong after a slow start, firing a second round 66, to finish tied for seventh overall, two strokes behind Chad Bryant of Midwestern State University, Drew Koonce of Texas Wesleyan University and Adam Carpenter of Abilene Christian University, who all finished with four-under par totals of four-under par. Rein’s 66 tied for the low round of the tournament and also tied for the seventh lowest round in school history.

Matt Vela (Jr., San Antonio) placed 12th overall with a 142, including a first round 69. Tim Paiz (Fr., San Antonio) tied for 20th in his first collegiate tournament, finishing with a two-round total of 144, Sam Jernigan (So., San Antonio) placed 39th with a 147, including a second round 70, while James Grant (Sr., San Antonio) and Jacob Torans (Fr., Devine) each tied for 71st with identical 160s.

In the team standings, Newman University and Texas Wesleyan University tied for first with scores of 570. Midwestern State was third with a 571, Cameron University was fourth with a 572 and St. Mary’s finished just three strokes back at 573.

The Rattlers will return to action on Monday, September 21, when they travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to compete in the Northeastern State University Classic.
