WICHITA, KAN.–The St. Mary’s University women’s basketball defeated Newman University, 49-34, in a defensive battle, extending the Rattlers win streak to 21 games in Heartland Conference women’s basketball action Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium.
Mallory Moeller (Fr., Seguin) had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way for the Rattlers. She hit on 12-of-14 shots from the free throw line in the game. Natalie Gamez (Jr., San Antonio) was the only other Rattler to score in double figures with 13 points in the game.
The Rattlers held Newman to just 23.9 percent shooting from the field (11-46) and forced a season-high 29 turnovers. St. Mary’s is now 22-4 overall and 13-0 in Heartland Conference play. They extended their school-record win streak to 21 games with the victory.
For the men, St. Mary’s continued its march towards the Heartland Conference Tournament, winning its second straight game, 67-60. Latez Williams (Sr., Hamilton, Ohio) was the only Rattler to score in double figures with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He hit on 9-of-16 shots from the field. St. Mary’s shot 45.5 percent (25-55) from the field in the game, while holding Newman to just 33.9 percent (21-62).
With the win the Rattlers are now 14-12 overall and 5-4 in Heartland Conference play. Both St. Mary’s teams will return to action on Saturday night when they travel to Jefferson City, Mo., for a men’s/women’s doubleheader at Lincoln University. The games will be the final regular season games for both teams.
