San Antonio – Liz Boyd scored a game-high 13 points, including three three-pointers, helping St. Mary’s University to a decisive 61-47 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Heartland Conference women’s basketball action Thursday night. The Rattler men’s team fell to OPSU by a 69-62 score on Thursday night.

Boyd (Fr., San Antonio) hit on 4-of-7 shots from the field, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range to lead all players in scoring. She played in just 20 minutes in her second straight start. Also reaching double figures for the Rattlers was Chastity Noble (Sr., El Paso, Texas) with 11 points and five assists, and Kristen Williams (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The game was a defensive struggle in the first half, with the Rattlers taking a 21-19 lead into the locker room. Neither team shot better than 27.3 percent from the field in the first period, while OPSU committed 16 turnovers. The first seven minutes of the second half went back-and-forth, but the Aggies took a two-point lead on a jumper by Callie Schafer with 13:26 left to play. However, the Rattlers took control after that. St. Mary’s made four three-pointers over the next eight minutes to key a 23-3 run that turned the game into a rout.

For the game, the Rattlers shot just 33.3 percent (22-66) from the field, but hit on 44.1 percent (15-34) in the second half. They made a solid 36.4 percent (8-22) of their shots from three-point range, including 50.0 percent (5-10) in the second half. St. Mary’s also forced 21 Aggie turnovers, while committing just 10 themselves. They also outrebounded OPSU 41-34.

With the win St. Mary’s improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in Heartland Conference play this season. OPSU fell to 4-7, 1-1. The Rattlers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Odessa, Texas, to face the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at 2 p.m.

The men’s game was a toss-up through the first half, but a decisive run by OPSU midway through the second half was too much for the Rattlers to overcome. With the Aggies leading by just a 46-42 score with 10:28 left to play, OPSU went on an 11-2 run that gave them a 13-point lead. The Rattlers pulled to within four points on an Aaron Thomas (So., San Antonio) jumper with 2:28 left in the game, but that was as close as they would come.

Kevin Kotzur (Fr., La Vernia, Texas) led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. The double-double was his second of the season and the 20 points tied his season best. The only other Rattler to score in double figures was Darren Lee (Sr., Stockton, Calif.), who had 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. As a team, the Rattlers hit on 43.1 percent (23-58) shots from the field and just 18.2 percent (2-11) of their shots from three-point range. OPSU made 50.0 percent (24-48) of its shots from the field.

With the loss, the Rattlers are now 3-6 overall and 0-1 in Heartland Conference play this season. OPSU is now 4-4, 1-1. St. Mary’s will return to action on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Texas-Permian Basin.
