San Antonio – St. Mary’s University used a scoring run early in the second half to take the lead for good, then used a stifling defense to hold the lead, as they defeated Ouachita Baptist University, 56-48, in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Steelman Field House. The men’s team was defeated by Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 50-49, at the Steinke Center in Kingsville.

Trailing by two points at the break, St. Mary’s used a 9-0 run to start the second half to take a lead that they would never relinquish. Liz Boyd (Fr., San Antonio) started the run with a three-pointer and Amber Sophus (So., Houston) hit back-to-back layups to compete the run that gave the Rattlers a 32-25 lead with 16:25 left in the game.

The Tigers cut the Rattler lead to just one at 44-43 on a lay-up by Domino Miller with 7:28 left to play. But the Rattlers responded with a 12-2 run, keyed by four points each from Chastity Noble (Sr., El Paso, Texas) and Boyd, to put the game away.

Noble and Boyd tied for the team lead in scoring with 14 points each. Boyd also added nine rebounds. Mareta Bailey (Jr., Grand Prairie, Texas) was the only other Rattler in double figures in scoring with 12 points. Kristin Williams (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.) had seven points and 10 rebounds.

With the win, St. Mary’s improved to 6-3 this season, while Ouachita Baptist fell to 4-3. The Rattlers will return to action on Dec. 17 when they travel to Goodwell, Okla., for their Heartland Conference opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 5:30 p.m.

In the men’s game, Flavio Milam’s free throws with 33 seconds left was the difference as Texas A&M University-Kingsville rallied for a 50-49 win over the Rattlers. St. Mary’s dominated the statistical game, outshooting and outrebounding the Javelinas. But the Rattlers committed 12 turnovers, while forcing just five in the game.

Darren Lee (Sr., Stockton, Calif.) led the Rattlers with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Curtis Mitchell (Sr., Milwaukee) had 12 points, while Kevin Kotzur (Fr., La Vernia, Texas) added 10 points and 8 rebounds. As a team, the Rattlers shot 43.5 percent (20-46), while holding TAMUK to just 33.9 percent (19-56). The Rattlers also outrebounded the Javelinas 37-30.

With the loss, the Rattlers fell to 3-5 this season, while TAMUK improved to 4-1. The Rattlers will return to action on Dec. 17 when they travel to Goodwell, Okla., for their Heartland Conference opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State University at 8 p.m.
