English Literature and Language at St. Mary’s

The Master of Arts in English Literature and Language engages students in narrative and storytelling practices, such as research, writing and outreach, to prepare them for a variety of professional environments.

The programs are designed to immerse students in ethical, inclusive and responsible representation in literature and language. Students develop narrative skills in print and digital platforms and are invited to hone these through the programs.

All program course offerings provide opportunities to refine research, writing and analytical skills while facilitating the creative presentation of student work in a variety of text and digital formats.

    We specialize in preparing professionals to develop and use narrative tools in a variety of employment options. Our graduates enjoy success in a range of professions including education, law, civic advocacy, organizational development, public relations, and marketing. Several study options are available:

Accessible Literature

There are virtually no ASL interpretations of higher-level readings, such as Homer’s “The Odyssey,” so a group of former and current students from the Department of English Literature and Language decided to change that.

The endeavor was made possible through a $1,500 grant from Humanities Texas, a nonprofit with a goal to create opportunities for lifelong learning and advance education throughout the state.

Joint Law and Master of English Literature and Language Degrees

The St. Mary’s School of Law and College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences offer a joint program of study leading to the degrees of Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) and Master of Arts in English Literature and Language. The joint degree program allows a student to complete the requirements for both degrees in three to four years.

Admission to the joint program requires application to both schools, although application to graduate programs need not be made until the student begins law school. Upon successful application to both programs, students work with the graduate program director and the law school to coordinate student scheduling for completion of both degree programs.
