{"id":240,"date":"2016-10-14T10:19:00","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T10:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stmarytx.edu\/policies\/?post_type=policep&#038;p=240"},"modified":"2025-10-03T12:34:57","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T12:34:57","slug":"medical-emergencies-and-first-aid","status":"publish","type":"university-police","link":"https:\/\/www.stmarytx.edu\/policies\/university-police\/medical-emergencies-and-first-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical Emergencies and First Aid"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the event an employee or any other person on the campus or property of the University is seriously injured or has a medical emergency, employees must immediately call the University Police Department at extension 1911. The employee must give his\/her name, describe the nature and severity of the medical problem, and provide the campus location of the person injured. The Police Department will contact 911 for ambulance services if deemed necessary. In the event of a medical emergency that does not require the service of an ambulance; the University will help the employee make arrangements with an emergency contact or next of kin.&nbsp;If a University employee needs medical attention for a work-related injury, the employee will be provided transportation to a pre-arranged contracted medical facility through the University\u2019s Worker\u2019s Compensation carrier. If the Office of Human Resources staff is unavailable, University Police will contact the medical facility to arrange transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees who witness a medical emergency incurred by a co-worker are asked to follow the emergency procedure stated above and contact the University Police Department immediately. Police Department staff will contact 911 for ambulance services if necessary. If the injury is not a life-threatening emergency, and the Office of Human Resources staff is unavailable, University Police may call the contracted medical facility for transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University is not obligated to transport employees to doctor appointments, therapy appointments for medical-related situations, or follow-up appointments.
