St. Mary’s began participating in 40 Days of Service in association with Catholic Charities of San Antonio in 2016. St. Mary’s will participate in 40 Days of Service every year, starting with Continuing the Heritage Day of Service each spring.

Allied Women's Center

Mission

Since 1994, Allied Women’s Center has operated Catholic crisis pregnancy centers in San Antonio. The philosophy of the Allied Women’s Center is simple: do whatever needs to be done to save the baby. When a baby is saved, the center provides aid for a mother and baby for one year or more, if necessary.

Volunteer Opportunity

Preparing boxes of baby supplies to be delivered to the Gabriel Project when it moves into its new location. Also, sorting donated baby clothes and other donated items.

Animal Defense League of Texas

Mission

Chartered in 1934, the Animal Defense League is a non-profit organization that is a true no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for these animals by providing needed medical care, including spaying and neutering. Food, shelter, and safety are also provided – along with compassion and attention. While maintaining a healthy and loving facility, ADL consistently works to find the best possible home for each resident animal.

Volunteer Opportunity

We will offer a mix of a service project and animal interaction. The project will involve either painting, landscaping or organizing a room. We will provide all of the supplies needed. Animal interaction will involve both cats and dogs. Anyone allergic to cats or dogs should not sign up to volunteer. There will be exposure to animals and animal dander even with the service project. A brief orientation will be held to explain the dog walking and cattery rules.

Community Walthroughs - this is an outreach effort where we go door-to-door in the neighborhood we serve to see if there are any immediate needs that we can meet but also to grow relationships that could lead to possible mentoring or small groups.

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of SA, Inc

The mission of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc is to provide for the needs of the community through selfless service under the sign of love. The Guadalupe Community Center, under the umbrella of Catholic Charities, provides 12 programs that are dedicated to providing support and advocacy services to individuals and families. The mission is to provide human services that enhance the culture, health, and quality of life of individuals and families in the San Antonio community.

Volunteer Opportunity

The volunteers will assist in the mission of Catholic Charities to build capacity for our family self-sufficiency programs. They will assist organizing clothing donations and accounting for donated goods and services that are provided to individuals and families in need. They may also assist with planting flowers and beautifying the center to make it more welcoming and dignified.

Eastside Neighborhood Garden

Eastside Neighborhood Garden (ESNG), a neighborhood community garden located on the near eastside of San Antonio, Texas. We are located on Center Street, just off of N. Walters Street. Our primary gardeners are senior citizens from nearby neighborhoods; we have youth gardeners who tend beds, and participate in garden upkeep as their school, and extracurricular activities allow.

Volunteer Opportunity

Garden maintenance to include weeding, tree trimming, weed eating, bagging of organically only into Kraft bags for recycling by Solid Wasre for composting. Requires bending, stooping and lifting. Please wear sun hats, sun screen.

We are a nonprofit organization and our Community Garden, "Labor Serena" is under Green Spaces Network has been providing goods from our garden to the local neighborhood. The garden also provides a neighborhood hang-out for its senior citizens during spring and early summer. We also provide a free Spring Break Camp for local neighborhood youth during Spring Break and will be providing a Winter Break Camp in December 2016. Our volunteers and the senior citizens that take advantage of the community garden provide breakfast, snack and lunch to Spring Break participants.

Volunteer Opportunity

We desperately need to have our vegetable beds cleaned out and will provide the plants to be planted in preparation for Spring Break. Will need to clean up area in preparation for activities for kids and area where we will be making an outdoor pizza oven.

Family Service Association

The International Garden tries to host 4 or 5 general workdays each year for the garden in various phases. This will be our first workday of the year as we begin the initial preparation for Spring planting in early March. Plots will be assigned to the refugee gardeners in early January and this workday will be dedicated to helping them do some of the initial preparation for their individual plots. (e.g., removing old plant residue, hand tilling of small plots, repairing raised bed boxes, etc.) All necessary tools will be provided, including gloves. Supervision of individual tasks will be provided by Master Gardeners.

Roots of Change Community Garden At Southwest Workers Union

Southwest Workers Union is a social and environmental justice organization and the Roots of Change Community Garden is part of the healthy communities program which we look at directly addressing the local food desert by increasing food access and knowledge of growing food to gain food sovereignty and independence.

Volunteer Opportunity

We will be maintaining the garden area which includes spreading mulch and learning about sheet mulching, cleaning up garden beds, weeding weeds, and learning about the other various techniques we use on site.

San Antonio Area Food Bank (Indoor Warehouse)

The San Antonio Food Bank provides food and grocery products to more than 530 partner agencies in 16 counties throughout Southwest Texas. In FY2015, the San Antonio Food Bank provided nearly 62 million pounds of food. The mission of the SAFB is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education, and advocacy.

Volunteer Opportunity

Assist with organizing food inside the warehouse, moving and redistributing items throughout the warehouse, reorganizing the produce store in warehouse, etc.

San Antonio Pets Alive

Mission

San Antonio Pets Alive was created to help make San Antonio become a No Kill city by working with Animal Care Services to adopt out cats and dogs that end up in our city shelter. Since its inception 4.5 years ago, SAPA has adopted out over 30,000 animals. In the past, these dogs and cats would have been euthanized.

Volunteer Opportunity

The students will first be trail walking dogs through Brackenridge Park. The dogs live in kennels, day in and day out, so they fully appreciate the mental and physical exercise, as well as the contact with humans. After that, the students will oversee puppy play, where puppies are taught to socialize with each other and with humans.

San Antonio State Hospital

Mission

The San Antonio State Hospital (SASH) provides intensive inpatient diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitative, and referral services for seriously mentally ill persons from South Texas regardless of their financial status. Admission may be voluntary or involuntary depending on whether the patient is determined by a court to be seriously mentally ill, dangerous to self or others, or if left untreated would deteriorate to the point of becoming dangerous to self or others. SASH attempts to involve the patient's family in the treatment/rehabilitation process to the degree legally and clinically feasible.

Volunteer Opportunity

SASH is seeking volunteers (over 18 years of age) to assist with our Chapel Beautification Project. Volunteers will paint a small gazebo, and clean up landscaping. Landscaping will include clipping hedges, pulling weeds, trimming bushes and general landscape clean up.

St. Mary's Community Garden

St. PJ's Children's Home

We are an emergency shelter for children that have been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. Our mission is to be a safe and loving refuge for children in crisis and to accompany them on their journey to healing and wholeness, breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect one child at a time.

Soccer tournament with our international unaccompanied minor program children. Our children LOVE to play soccer and they love to have a group come out and play soccer for our children.

The DoSeum

The DoSeum is a children's museum that is dedicated to educating youth with a focus on STEM. It is dedicated to children birth to 11 years old. A non-profit organization that is located in the community of Alamo Heights.

Volunteer Opportunity

The project will be focused on the facilitation of activities in the 8 permanent galleries at The DoSeum. It will include the interaction between the students and the guest (children and families). It may also include prep work for gallery activities.

The Gardens of St. Therese

Mission

Founded in 2006, we are a community garden located at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower (Our Lady of Mount Carmel & St. Therese Parish). The gardens are nurtured and maintained by parishioners and local volunteers. There are 24 official garden plots dedicated to St. Therese. Numerous other herb and vegetable plots that have been added over the years. Our garden is sponsored by Green Spaces Alliance as part of their Community Gardens Network.

Volunteer Opportunity

The students and volunteers will work on garden maintenance projects along with several gardeners. These projects will include, weeding, hauling and spreading mulch and compost, trimming the hedges and disposing of garden waste. Other projects may include painting and small building projects.

The Westminster Lay Marianist Community

The Westminster Lay Marianist Community is an organization committed to bettering the St. Mary's Gateway district. We dedicate ourselves to working with Holy Rosary parish and to the neighbors that are in most need.

Volunteer Opportunity

The house itself needs several things installed - thresholds around the doors, new energy efficient light bulbs, and other items. The house also is in need of some garden and shrub maintenance. If time allows students will walk the neighborhood and lead a trash pick up.
