Ozan Scholarship

Turgut Ozan Memorial Scholarship Fund

Turgut Ozan, Ph.D. (1919 – 2011)

The founder of the St. Mary’s University engineering program, Turgut Ozan, Ph.D., passed away on June 13, 2011 at the age of 92. Ozan taught generations of St. Mary’s students from the humble beginnings of the program, when he served as the only full-time faculty member, until his retirement in 2000. Today, 50 years after the program’s founding, it has grown to include six undergraduate and five graduate programs. In May 2011, the Department of Engineering graduated its largest class ever. We owe a debt of gratitude to Ozan for his leadership and vision in creating the first engineering program in San Antonio.

Established in 2005 in Ozan’s honor, the Turgut Ozan Memorial Scholarship Fund supports exceptional students majoring in any of the undergraduate programs offered through the Department of Engineering. The scholarship is open to all engineering students without any restrictions. The value of the scholarship endowment has now reached $100,000 and the first award will be made to an entering freshman this fall. With your help, we intend to grow the fund to $1,000,000 in order to provide scholarship assistance to 10 outstanding students each year.

We hope you will honor Ozan’s memory and contributions to St. Mary’s University by expanding the scholarship assistance available to St. Mary’s engineering students. His legacy will endure through the students whom he taught and inspired as well as the future generations of students whose education will be made possible through the Turgut Ozan Memorial Scholarship. Scholarships are critical to the University’s ability to attract and retain a diverse and talented student body and give them the best chance of success, both in school and in life.
