- Therapeutic humor in counseling
Nicholas Wilkens, Ph.D., was invited to teach at St. Mary’s within a year of his doctoral graduation in 2001. He has been teaching and serving as a clinical supervisor in the department’s Family Life Center since that time, and has been promoted to Senior Lecturer/Professor Pro Rata. Dr. Wilkens is especially interested in the use of therapeutic humor in counseling, including its advantages and disadvantages. He is also greatly interested in couples counseling, and has taught the Marital Therapy core course at St. Mary’s every year since 2003.
In addition to his work at St. Mary’s, Dr. Wilkens also serves as the Executive Director of the Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center in Seguin, Texas, and has a private practice at the Institute for Couple and Family Enhancement in San Antonio. Additionally, Dr. Wilkens and his wife Ashley, a fellow LMFT, run Insight Education, LLC and its website www.mycounselingceus.com. Insight Education is an online CEU provider for LMFTs, LPCs, LCSWs, psychologists and other mental health professionals, pre-approved by the appropriate state licensing boards.
Dr. Wilkens enjoys time with his family, playing guitar and drums, stand-up comedy, and trying to stay out of his refrigerator after midnight.
