Biography

Born in Michigan, Bradley W. Root, Ph.D., grew up in Dallas and did his graduate and undergraduate work at the University of California, San Diego. He is a specialist in ancient history, and his research interests focus on early Christianity and ancient Judaism.

He teaches courses on historiography and research methods, world history, the Hebrew Bible, ancient history, the history of Christianity and military history.

Root hopes that by the end of their time at St. Mary’s, students will be able to think critically about the past and to make logical, evidence-based arguments. He also recognizes the importance of oral and written communication skills and helps students develop them. Root is very proud to see his students use these skills when they present their original research at department symposia and national conferences.

He finds the friendly environment and strong sense of community at St. Mary’s unparalleled to his experiences elsewhere. Root believes the small class sizes allow him to develop meaningful bonds with his students and make a more significant impact on their intellectual growth. He has been a part of the Faculty Academic Mentor Program since 2011.

When he’s not in the classroom, you can find Root researching for and writing his next book or rooting for the Dallas Cowboys.
