Biography

Bahman Rezaie, Ph.D., joined St. Mary’s University of San Antonio in 1983. He has served as Faculty, Program Director, and Chairperson in the Department of Engineering as well as Interim Dean of the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology. He has numerous contributions and achievements throughout his tenure at St. Mary’s.  

In late 1990s, Rezaie led and heavily contributed to the migration of the St. Mary’s Institution into the technology era using $2.1 million grant from DOE to accomplish this task. At the same time, he introduced inclusion of laptop for every student who registered at the University.

Throughout his tenancy, he has been instrumental in establishing the Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Engineering Management, and Mechanical Engineering programs here at St. Mary’s University. He also spearheaded accreditation of Electrical and Computer Engineering programs in the Engineering Department.

Furthermore, he was the architect of two successful concentrations in the Engineering Science area, namely the Premed and the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) known as drone’s technology. Recently, he has embarked on a fundraising effort for the Engineering Department to establish an endowment for the maintenance of the laboratories in the Department.

Rezaie’s main research interest lies in the area of signal and image processing. In particular, development of new techniques and algorithms for pattern recognition, which are among the fundamental techniques in signal processing. The rapidly increasing resolution and size of images demand a more efficient pattern matching algorithms to accelerate the identification and registration processes. These algorithms are among the crucial ingredients of image understanding as well as machine and deep learning.

Rezaie earned his B.S. in Physics, ranked 1st in class, from Pars College, Iran, and his second B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Suma Cum Laude, from Southern Methodist University. He continued his education at SMU and earned M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. Rezaie is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi honorary societies of engineering.
