Biography

Samantha Franklin, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Physics in the St. Mary’s University Physics and Environmental Science Department. After a stint as an adjunct faculty member, she joined St. Mary’s University full time in August 2016.

Samantha received her Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2016. In 2008, she moved to San Antonio from the Rio Grande Valley to complete her undergraduate degree. She graduated with her bachelor degree in Physics from St. Mary’s University in 2010.

Samantha’s main research area is Functional Nanomaterials for biological applications. This area of research relates physics to biology and chemistry by studying cellular response when bio-compatible gold nanoparticles are introduced into the biological system; as well as their interaction upon laser light excitation for use in cancer and Alzheimer’s treatment.

She is also involved in SPS and Fiesta of Physics, which is a University outreach program part of the Physics Department that focuses on enhancing the importance of science to local elementary students.
