“How’s the battle against ignorance?” is a question students are familiar with in Richard Bauer’s classroom. Although Bauer, Ph.D., uses this question to poke fun with his students, the Professor of Finance hopes it serves as a reminder that learning should never stop.
The former Bill Greehey School of Business MBA director (1992-1994) currently supervises the $1.6 million student-managed Investment Portfolio. In addition to teaching an undergraduate course on the portfolio, Bauer helped with expanding the project to include another undergraduate course and MBA course.
The golf fan co-writes with his wife a finance column for Active Trader Magazine, a bi-monthly publication with a 60,000-person readership. Bauer also serves as the secretary and treasurer for Beta Gamma Sigma, a St. Mary’s student business honor society. The father of four enjoys spending time with his kids and five grandchildren. Outside of the classroom, Bauer travels, and has visited more than 21 various countries.
Bauer recalls his proudest moment as the time when he and his wife received the Dow Jones Award from The Market Technicians’ Association in 2011.
Bauer is the author of Genetic Algorithms and Investment Strategies, Technical Market Indicators and Technical Analysis of Gaps. Other work he has completed has appeared in a variety of academic journals.
