The St. Mary’s University Neighborhood Revitalization Project received a major boost last month, when a $150,000 funding agreement sponsored by City Councilman Cris Medina was approved by the San Antonio City Council.

“The St. Mary’s University Neighborhood Revitalization Project is a collaboration of help by the City of San Antonio, St. Mary’s University, and the University Park Neighborhood Association focusing on commercial transformation, housing rehabilitation, infrastructure and quality of life improvements,” Medina said. “It is imperative for the city to support this initiative to continue to build upon the progress made thus far.”

The funding will be put toward improvements along Cincinnati Avenue, maintenance of pocket parks, installation of public art, grant applications to seek further funding, sign installation, community outreach, website maintenance and other administrative activities for the St. Mary’s University Revitalization Area.

“Cincinnati Avenue is a vital thoroughfare for St. Mary’s and San Antonio’s Northwest Side,” said St. Mary’s President Thomas Mengler. “It’s a great opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the community. Reviving this area will benefit us all.”

The St. Mary’s University Neighborhood Revitalization Project was established in 2007 in an effort to work with neighbors and other partners on renewing the area around St. Mary’s. The target area, now known as the Gateway District, is bordered by Bandera Road, Ruiz Street, N. Zarzamora Street and Broadview Road.
