China Exchange Program

Beihang University_582Beihang University, or BUAA for short, was founded on October 25, 1952. The International School of BUAA is well known for providing international students a large range of extracurricular activities, from sports clubs to photographic exhibitions. Other popular activities include introductions to Chinese culture, such as music, calligraphy and painting. Every semester the International School organizes trips for international students to visit scenic areas and some of the many famous historic and cultural sites in and around the city of Beijing.

About the China Exchange Program

Great-Wall-of-China-BeijingThe China Exchange Program is through an agreement between Beihang University (School of Foreign Language) in Beijing, China and St. Mary’s University. Students pay tuition at St. Mary’s and no additional tuition is charged by the host university in China. Students can spend one or two semesters studying in China. Beihang University does not have a language proficiency requirement; however, they do recommend students to have sufficient Chinese or English language skills to be successful in their exchange program of study.

The City of Beijing, China

Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and one of the most populated cities in the world with roughly 21,150,000 inhabitants. Located in northern China, Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by urban population. The city of Beijing is renowned for its palaces, temples, parks and gardens, tombs, walls and gates, and its art treasures and universities have made it a center of culture and art in China.

Program Dates

Students can choose to study for one semester or a full academic year. Students need to complete the Study Abroad Application by:

  • May 1 for fall and academic year
  • October 15 for spring

Admission, Costs and Housing

Students interested in applying for the China Exchange Program must complete the study abroad application no later than May 1 for fall semester and academic year, and October 15 for the spring semester.Your application will be reviewed by the Study Abroad Office and nominated by this office to PUC. If accepted, you will need to complete the application for Beihang University. A representative with the St. Mary’s Study Abroad Office will assist with this process.

Costs. Students pay St. Mary’s tuition and attend Beihang University. Program fee does not include charges that you will pay either directly to Beihang University or out of pocket expenses.  Students will be responsible for travel, living, International health insurance, room and board, and books. A Student Visa is required to study in China. Please contact the Study Abroad Office or the Financial Aid Office for more information. The estimated cost for this program is $15,828.

Housing. The dormitory is specifically for foreign students. It is equipped with TV, refrigerator, air-conditioner, telephone and internet access.

Eligibility Criteria for Beihang University:

  • Student must be a full-time student.
  • Student must be enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program.
  • Student must have a good academic record.
  • Student must have sufficient Chinese or English language skills to be successful in their exchange program of study.

Students  can take Chinese lessons at no additional cost, if interested.
