Pathway Program

St. Mary’s University now offers students who meet all admission requirements except for the English level requirement a pathway to admission as an undergraduate student or to select graduate programs.

The Pathway Program allows students to receive conditional acceptance and progress into an academic degree-seeking program without having to retake an official TOEFL or IELTS exam.

How it works.

There are two options for students seeking to enter our Pathway Program.

Option 1

Apply directly to the Office of Admission for acceptance as an undergraduate or graduate student. Students who meet all admission requirements except for the 6.0 IELTS score (or equivalent) will be eligible for conditional acceptance through the St. Mary’s Pathway Program.

Students will then be enrolled in the Intensive English Program and once they complete it successfully, can begin their academic study at St. Mary’s University.

Option 2

Students first apply to the Intensive English Program. Once on campus, IEP students may apply for admission to one of our degree programs, with our staff providing application and documentation advising and support.

Students who meet all requirements for admission except for the required 6.0 IELTS score (or equivalent) will be accepted into the St. Mary’s Pathway Program. Once they successfully complete the program, they can begin their academic study at St. Mary’s University.

What is “successful completion”?

For undergraduate students, successful completion of the Pathway Program requires:

  • More than 90 percent attendance for all IEP courses
  • A grade of B or better in all IEP courses
  • Appropriate score on institutional version of IELTS or other recognized English proficiency exam.

In addition, students who progress into an undergraduate course of study must enroll in EN6301 during their first semester as a degree-seeking student.

For graduate students, successful completion of the Pathway Program requires:

  • More than 95 percent attendance for all IEP courses
  • A grade of B+ or better in all IEP courses
  • Successful interview with program director or adviser
  • Appropriate score on institutional version of IELTS or other recognized English proficiency exam,
  • A review of a sample academic writing assignment at the same level expected for their intended degree program

In addition, students who progress into a graduate course of study must enroll in EN6301 during their first semester as a degree-seeking student.
