Accepting one of the first faculty positions in a brand new academic program at a Catholic University would be a daunting venture for anyone, let alone a recent doctoral graduate, but that’s exactly what Shamik Bhattacharya, Ph.D., did in 2013 following his postdoctoral research at the University of Connecticut.
As an assistant professor, Bhattacharya is helping to spearhead the fledgling Mechanical Engineering program at St. Mary’s. He’s also making full use of the opportunity to lay the framework for a curriculum highlighted by undergraduate research and other hands-on learning experiences to help keep students at the cutting edge of engineering education.
Bhattacharya’s own research interests include cardiovascular tissue mechanics, biofluid mechanics, mechanobiology of heart valves and medical devices. He frequently collaborates with surgeons at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Outside the classroom, Bhattacharya is in charge of the San Antonio Boosting Engineering Science and Technology (S.A. BEST) committee, which encourages science and engineering education in area high schools.
