Biography
Ms. Leslie Lyon is an adjunct faculty member in the St. Mary’s University Department of Music where she is the instructor for the guitar courses since fall of 1978.
She teaches a variety of guitar courses at St. Mary’s for music majors, music minors and non-music majors who need to fulfill their fine arts elective credit. Some non-music majors choose to take multiple semesters of private lessons or guitar ensemble as a compliment to their liberal arts education. The courses offered are: Private Guitar Instruction, for multiple semesters as needed for the advancing music major and minor degree requirements; Beginning Guitar Class; and Guitar Ensemble. Students explore a kaleidoscope of music aspects such as beautiful expressive performance, progressive music reading, development of technical skills, introduction to the history and composers of the guitar repertoire. The culmination of music lessons and practice is performance in a variety of recitals and special events.
Ms. Lyon has extensive performing experience performing solo; with the San Antonio Guitar Quartet (1978-2003); Nova Trio for flute, English horn, and guitar (1988-2000); Nova Duo, flute and guitar (1988 to present). These performing groups commissioned new works performed at Southwest Guitar Festivals, Texas Composers Festivals, International Double Reed Society, National Flute Association, and Victoria Bach Festival among many other venues in the Southwest and Midwest.
She arranged and performed guitar accompaniment for Voci di Sorelle, San Antonio’s premier women’s vocal ensemble (2004-2013) and is featured on their Enchanté CD (2006). For several years Voci di Sorelle’s annual Christmas Concert was aired on KPAC 88.3 Radio on Christmas Eve.
Her solo compositions for guitar are published by Southern Music Company (1982). Ms. Lyon continues to compose and arrange music for a variety of music occasions.
Ms. Lyon is a freelance musician for hire to perform at special events, such as weddings, receptions, dinners, birthdays and funerals.
Leslie Lyon has a Bachelor of Music degree from Trinity University (1977) in classical guitar performance with Mr. David Underwood. She performed at the Pepe Romero masterclasses in Houston, TX (Summer 1977) .
Ms. Lyon taught guitar courses at Our Lady of the Lake University from 1979-2015 and was a visiting guitar instructor at The University of Texas at San Antonio the academic year of 1988-89.
