Biography

James Edward García is a tenor, conductor, composer, and bass guitarist with more than 30 years’ experience in music instruction, music ministry, and performance. In addition to directing Opera at St. Mary’s University, he directs music at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, teaches private voice for Northside ISD, and performs in several Rock and Blues ensembles.

In addition to founding and serving as artistic director for the Episcopal Choral Consortium (2006-2011), Mr. García has performed with the San Antonio Choral Society and the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers. He has presented concerts in choral music, sacred art song, Gospel, spirituals, contemporary praise, and classic Jazz, premiering over 100 original compositions and arrangements. He has created worship services ranging from Lessons & Carols to contemporary praise. His students have regularly made the Texas All-State Choir, performed at regional Jazz festivals, and won a multitude of music scholarships across the U.S.

Mr. García holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Texas at San Antonio with graduate studies in Choral Conducting. His primary teachers include Dr. Reed K. Holmes, Dr. James S. Balentine, and Dr. William Thornton in composition; Dr. John J. Silantien in conducting; Jeffrey Johnson and James Kalson in double bass and bass guitar; and Ms. Irene Liden, Dr. Cody Garner, and Gary L. Mabry in voice.
