Student Experiences

From a first-year Greehey Scholar:

IMG_8464-editAs a first-year student in the Greehey Scholars Program, I have been given several wonderful opportunities to grow and learn. Since the fall, I have been an active member of Habitat for Humanity, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and the Greehey Scholars’ marketing team. Through Habitat for Humanity and VITA, I have grown in my appreciation for the San Antonio community and am grateful to have been able to contribute to it in such unique ways. As for my participation in the marketing team, the group responsible for the monthly newsletter and Greehey Scholars’ social media accounts, I feel that I have been able to grow personally in my writing and strategy-building skills.

Through Greehey Scholars, I have also been able to visit companies around San Antonio and participate in two important projects. In the fall semester I was fortunate enough to be chosen to take part in the Virgin Islands Service Immersion Trip as a member of the three-person website redesign team. As a member of this team my colleagues and I researched and made recommendations about maximizing the appeal of a website for the Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands. The experience was invaluable as it was the first time I have been given the opportunity to do such meaningful work with immediate results.

This semester I am a part of the Union Pacific consulting project that the Greehey Scholars is undertaking. As a member of the strategy team, I have become exposed to business research and am examining recruiting techniques for general and transportation-industry-specific companies. I am grateful to be a part of this project because I feel that it has practical application in the business world and that it is providing me with new challenges.

Overall, I am so thankful to be a part of the Greehey Scholars Program as it has helped me become more involved within the San Antonio community as well as provided me with the tools and exposure I need to make the best of my undergraduate experience

From a returning Greehey Scholar:

As a third-year scholar, approaching my final year of my undergraduate degree has prompted me to look back on my last three years at St. Mary’s and wonder what type of person and student I would be if not for the Greehey Scholars Program. I have had numerous opportunities to develop as a young, professional leader that have been irreplaceable in the development of who I am today.

IMG_3699I have taken trips to Florida, New York, Washington, D.C., as well as Belize, Malaysia and Singapore, helping me gain international business experience and enhance my global knowledge. I have also been blessed with several internships with companies like Covenant Multifamily Office, Still Water Christian Ministries, and most recently USAA, where I am working this summer. Aside from the travel and career opportunities, I have grown tremendously not only as a student, but as a future leader through the projects, service work and seminars we have done. I have been able to take those skills and apply them to the community through leadership positions with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Student Ethics Round Table, the American Marketing Association, the Student Government Association, The Greehey Leadership Team, and many others.

We could all spend our time listing the many opportunities the program has provided us, but I would say the most invaluable one is undeniably the educational opportunity this program has allowed us to experience. I can honestly say this program has shaped and modeled me into a person I never thought I could be, and I am not yet finished!
