Led by Clare Acosta-Matos, Community Engagement
The International Immersion Program experience focuses on being with, learning from, and building relationships with the people of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Through the Catholic volunteer program Rostro de Crísto, St. Mary’s students have the opportunity to spend 8 days living, learning and experiencing Ecuadorian culture in light of the Catholic faith. Our students spend time with people suffering from Hansen’s Disease, more commonly known as leprosy.
The program is led by Clare Acosta-Matos, who works with students to engage in theological reflection, social analysis and relationship building in the hope of embracing global solidarity. This immersion experience invites students to enter the reality of the world, grow in faith, and become agents of change for the common good. Upon return, students participate in the annual Ecuador Showcase, in which they not only share their own experiences, but relate the stories of the people of Guayaquil to the rest of the university community. All study abroad programs
