St. Mary's University San Antonio, TX EventScheduled 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM - University Center, Conference Room A: The St. Mary's University and San Antonio community are invited to join us for an evening discussion of Latino Catholicism: San Antonio and the Transformation of the U.S. Church. During the 1960s and 1970s, growing civil rights and labor activism in Hispanic communities across the United States, along with the reforms of Vatican II, and the 1968 conference of the Council of Latin American Bishops in Medellin, Columbia, sparked a national movement in Latino pastoral ministry and theology. Many San Antonio Catholics became social and cultural activists, innovative theologians and pastors, and even institution-builders on behalf of the poor, neglected and excluded Mexican American majority. Their influential work helped spark an Encuentro movement that, for the first time, united Hispanic Catholics from across the United States. 0 0 1 169 968 St. Mary's University 8 2 1135 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} The recent passing of former San Antonio Archbishop Patricio Flores, who was the first Mexican American to become a bishop of the Catholic Church in the U.S., and The Rev. St. Mary's University San Antonio, TX EventScheduled 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM - Reinbolt Hall, Assumption Chapel: Grappling with the Prophetic Tradition in the 21st Century What does being a prophet mean? How are we to understand our prophetic vocation in this 21st Century? This presentation unravels the times, persona, mission, message, and vision of the Bible’s ancient prophets who lead us into an understanding of who God is, who Jesus is, who we are, and who we are meant to become in our 21st century world plagued with violence, yet pregnant with hope. Special attention will be given to the Prophets volume of The Saint John's Bible to discover how artistic expression illuminates the prophets' message and vision. Carol J. Dempsey, OP, Ph.D., is Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Portland, Oregon. She holds a B.A. from Caldwell College, New Jersey, an M.A. from St. Louis University, Missouri, and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where she studied both Old and New Testament and biblical languages. Her forthcoming books include Isaiah 1-39: Berit Olam Series: Studies in Hebrew Poetry (Liturgical Press) and Isaiah: A Feminist Commentary (Liturgical Press). The Escobedo Saint John's Bible Lecture Series is made possible by the generous gift of Ruben (B.B.A. '60) and Veronica Escobedo. The Saint John’s Bible, the world’s newest handwritten, hand-illuminated bible, was commissioned in 1998 by the Benedictine monks of Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and is the first such bible to be commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey since the advent of the printing press more than 550 years ago. The Heritage Edition, acquired by St. Mary's University, is a numbered, full-scale fine art reproduction of the original.Lectures are free and open to the public.
