St. Mary’s sophomore Erick Roman and his business partner, Katalina Inzunza, won the fifth annual Canyon Challenge entrepreneurial competition last month at Grand Canyon University.

The duo won $7,000 and the opportunity to meet with other potential investors. They pitched Raffle Boss, a more profitable and accessible way to hold raffles online.

“RaffleBoss.com is a crowdfunding website I want to create where groups and individuals can raise money by setting up online raffles,” said the Finance and Risk Management major. Roman also is a former Faculty Academic Mentor (FAM) student.

The event is hosted by the Colangelo College of Business. According to the Canyon Challenge website, winners are selected based on the quality and professionalism of written and oral presentations, as well as the viability of the business. A panel of five independent judges hear the final presentations.

The IDEA Selection Committee reviews preliminary submissions. IDEA is a Grand Canyon University student organization that helps students, faculty and staff create, evaluate and implement ideas that provide value to others.
