Alex Briseño’s résumé is long and impressive. For decades Briseño, Professor of Public Service in Residence at St. Mary’s University, has lived a life dedicated to public service.

He has worked in a variety of high-profile positions for places such as the City of San Antonio, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, San Antonio Water System, San Antonio Technology Accelerator Initiative Network and Brooks Development Authority. Not to mention he has also served on the board for San Antonio Water System and Bexar County University Health System, just to name a few, during his career.

“Today I participate in public service by nurturing students in public service,” Briseño said.

Students at St. Mary’s who are passionate about public administration and public service are quick to register for courses taught by the retired city manager of the City of San Antonio. It’s not every day you can learn from someone who has experience managing a $1.2 billion budget or putting together $899 million financing plans to double the size of a hospital.

His lifelong commitment to public service was recognized on March 22, 2016, when he was awarded the Hidalgo Proclamation by County Commissioner Tommy Calvert and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff (B.B.A. ’66, J.D. ’66).

Briseño was honored to receive such recognition. He also said he was pleased to see his commitment to teaching come full circle during the ceremony when he saw two of his former St. Mary’s students in the audience, both pursuing careers committed to public service. It was a simple reminder that his life’s work will carry on.
