Biography

Juan Ocampo, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized researcher, mentor and educator with a commitment to increasing diversity in STEM and advancing research in structural reliability and the improvement of the safety of aerospace structures. Ocampo is a key contributor on three Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants regarding the safety and reliability of aircraft components totaling approximately $3.5M. He participated in the development of the digital twin project in partnership with Northrop Grumman Corporation and USAF.

Ocampo is part of the CONsortium on Nuclear sECurity Technologies (CONNECT) which is funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (NNSA MSIPP). This program is designed to build a pipeline between the Department of Energy’s sites and labs and minority-serving institutions in STEM disciplines and bring a heightened awareness of NNSA plants and laboratories to institutions with a common interest in STEM research fields. Ocampo recently received an NSF grant – Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions from NSF to increase the number of Latinx students who obtain baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields. To date at St. Mary’s University, he has secured $1.4M in funding from FAA, USAF, NNSA, and NSF to continue his research in structural reliability and expose minority students to research opportunities.

Ocampo is well-recognized throughout the aircraft reliability community. He has coauthored and presented nine training sessions on “Probabilistic Methods with Applications to Probabilistic Damage Tolerance Analysis” to international audiences through the Aircraft Airworthiness & Safety Conference, the Air Force Structural Integrity Conference, the Swiss Air Force, and Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. He has authored or co-authored 39 conference and journal papers related to aerospace structural reliability, and three FAA reports. He has presented his research at the prestigious International Conference on Aeronautical Fatigue (Japan, 2017 and Poland, 2019) and at the invitation-only HOLSIP (Holistic Structural Integrity Process) conference five times.

Ocampo is an award-winning individual with multiple awards including a national award from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Extraordinary Achievement in Aviation Research. Ocampo conducted research at international institutions as the National Research Council of Canada and Pilatus Aircraft Ltd.
