School to host Binational Conversation on Mexican Women’s Perspectives

The St. Mary’s University School of Law, in partnership with the Centro de los Mexicanos en la Globalización, will host a Binational Conversation on Mexican Women’s Perspectives on Friday, Feb. 26.

The event is part of an ongoing expansion of ties between the St. Mary’s University School of Law and educational institutions in Mexico. The efforts include forming agreements with the Universidad de Guadalajara and Facultad Libre de Derecho de Monterrey to exchange students, faculty and legal publications.

“St. Mary’s Law is committed to expanding access to international legal education and to broadening understanding of U.S. and Mexican legal issues among St. Mary’s Law students and those enrolled in Mexico,” said St. Mary’s University School of Law Dean Stephen M. Sheppard, J.S.D. “Pursuing academic collaboration and cooperation with respected Mexican institutions and hosting the Binational Conversation on Mexican Women’s Perspectives enrich the educational experience of future legal leaders from both nations.”

During the Binational Conversation on Mexican Women’s Perspectives, a panel of human rights and equality experts will discuss women’s empowerment in Mexico and their contributions in the United States, including immigration issues and representation through the electoral process.

“This unprecedented event will allow experts from two countries with a shared border and shared migration issues to discuss the fundamental issue of human rights,” said Roberto Rosas, J.S.D., the St. Mary’s Law faculty member who organized the event. “It is an opportunity for those from both countries to move from anger to action and to overcome the deep human rights crisis that migration represents in our time.”

The event will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26, in Conference Room B of the University Center on the St. Mary’s campus.
