WHO: Joe W. “Chip” Pitts III, lawyer, businessman, human rights/civil
liberties activist, and frequent speaker and writer on domestic and foreign
policy. He is a board member of Amnesty International USA.

WHAT: Pitts will lecture on the topic, “America and the World:
Foreign Policy and Domestic and International Human Rights After 9/11.” His
talk, sponsored by Amnesty International USA, is coordinated by Sister Laola
Hironaka, F.M.I, who is the area coordinator for the San Antonio, Austin and
Houston region.

COST: Free and open to the general public. Lunch will be provided.

OF INTEREST: Charles Cotrell, Ph.D., president of St. Mary’s
University, will receive a certificate of honor from Amnesty International USA
in recognition of his outstanding leadership in peace and justice, which advances
the cause of human rights. Cotrell will receive the honor during a reception
at the St. Anthony Hotel downtown, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Amnesty International board of directors, Southern Regional Office and local
activists, will also honor pro bono defense attorney Walter Long for his work
in opposing juvenile executions. Syndicated columnist Molly Ivins will be the
featured speaker at the Saturday night event.
