"Education Under Fire" Screening

Tuesday, November 13, 2012
6:30 PM
Moody Life Science Room 102

Education Under Fire documents the growth, struggle, and inspiring spirit of the Baha'i Institute for Higher Education in Iran. Baha'is have been subjected to systematic persecution, including: arrests, torture, and execution simply for refusing to recant their beliefs. They are also prohibited from going to college and blocked from many professions. The semi-underground Baha'i Institute for Higher Education (BIHE) was formed in 1987 to give young Baha'i is their only chance for a university-level education. It created an independent, decentralized university system that has lifted the lives of thousands of Baha´is students across Iran.

In May, 2011, an organized assault was launched by the Iranian government in an attempt to shut down the BIHE. Over 30 homes were raided and over a dozen BIHE professors and administrators were detained. Several are still in prison for doing nothing more than trying to teach. The film connects a diverse audience to a grave human rights issue, a powerful story of resilience against oppression, and the need to respect human rights everywhere.

In the documentary, BIHE graduate Shahrzad Missaghi expresses a shared resolve, "The government can crush our bodies, but they cannot crush the mind and soul." Mojdeh Rohani, a BIHE graduate whose father was executed in 1981, says, "We can use this experience to not only just think about ourselves and what is important to us, but to look at the bigger picture; to think of people of this world as they were our own family." That is the larger, universal message of this film. “Education Under Fire” will inform and move a diverse audience around the world. After the screening, a student from BHIE will speak of their personal experiences as well as taking questions and answers from the audience.

Showing of "9500 Liberty" with special guest speaker Dulce Matuz

Tuesday, September 18, 2012
7:30 PM
Moody Life Science - 102

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, UPC and University Ministry will be screening "9500 Liberty." "9500 Liberty documents the first time in U.S. history that an Arizona-style immigration law was actually implemented and the surprising grassroots opposition that led to its repeal. Racial tension and threats of violence erupt when Prince William County, Virginia adopts a law requiring the police to question people who appear to be undocumented immigrants. Supporters of the law ride a wave of hysteria to an election victory. But many reconsider when the local economy feels the impact of a sudden exodus of workers, consumers, and business owners. Despite fears of reprisal, a group of concerned citizens launches a "virtual resistance" using social media, setting up a final showdown with the law s ferocious advocates."

Dulce Matuz, 27, was named Tim Magazine 100 Most Influential People in the World. Dulce represents the finest of her generation, putting herself through college partly via scholarships and graduating with an electrical-engineering degree. Fresh from her visit to the 2012 Democratic National Convention, as an undocumented Latina confronted with legal barriers to pursuing her engineering dream, she chose to fight for the right to contribute to the country she has called home since she was young. As president of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, Dulce promotes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who, like her, were brought to the U.S. before they were 16, attend college or serve in the military and are of good moral character. Dulce takes on powerful opponents with grace and conviction, saying, "We are Americans, and Americans don't give up."
