Web Guidelines

Creating Content for Your Visitors

Give visitors the information they need in the way they want and watch them devour it.

Web reading is not like print reading. Visitors want their information quickly.
Think about your own Web habits:

  • Do you read word-for-word, line-by-line or
  • Do you instead read in chunks, looking for key words and phrases?
  • Do rows and rows of endless text pull you in or make you navigate away?

Keep in mind that Web users:

  • Scan through pages
  • Pick out key words and phrases
  • Read in quick, short bursts
  • Are action oriented
  • Click and rummage searching for pieces of information that lead them to what they're looking for

These habits are true for commercial and non-commercial website users. So, you should create content based on the following recommendations:

  • Create an outline to guide you in deciding how to organize your information
  • Keep your content brief yet interesting
  • Start by stating your most compelling information in the first few words
  • Consider using short / brief bulleted lists and bolding a few key words
  • Use half of the words you would in print writing
  • Speak to, not at, your audience
  • Proofread to guard against publishing any errors.
  • Consider using images, infographics and video to engage your readers.

Keep in mind that the content you create is subject to review and will be edited for consistency with St. Mary's University's brand identity. You can learn more about the University's branding guidelines on the University Communications webpage.

Happy creating!
