Web Definitions

Browser: The term used for the software used to display Web pages. St. Mary's uses the two most popular browsers, Microsoft® Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, to display graphics, text and present multimedia information, such as sound and video.

Content Management System (CMS): St. Mary's uses a web-based CMS so that University members can access and update their websites. Users login to the CMS using their St. Mary's username and password. NOTE: You must first be added to the database by University Communications to gain access to CMS. If you wish to become a CMS user, please contact Rosemary Segura.

Domain name: A name, such as stmartx.edu, that identifies one or more IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs, or Web addresses, to identify a particular Web page.

Firewall: This system prevents unauthorized access to or from a private network, especially intranets.

Flash: Software that is used to create video and multimedia for websites.

.gif: Stands for graphics interchange format; a file extension for bitmap graphics.

Internet: An extensive computer network made up of thousands of other, smaller business, academic and governmental networks. Intranet: A private Internet network.

IP (Internet Protocol) Address: This is the numerical identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) network.

.jpg: Stands for Joint Photography Experts Group, a file extension for bitmap graphics or images.

Looping animation: A graphic element that flashes or moves and repeats itself continuously on a Web page.

Meta tags: Code used in HTML documents to provide search engines with information about your Web page, increasing your site's chances of being hit by visitors.

.pdf: Stands for portable document format, a file extension for a graphics file.

.png: Stands for portable network graphics, a file extension for bitmap graphics.

Site navigation: Text and graphic links that work together to help visitors navigate the website and understand what the site is about.

URL: Stands for Uniform Resource Locator, which the unique global address on the World Wide Web.

Wallpaper: A pattern used as background for a Web page. This is highly discouraged.

Web page: A document found on the World Wide Web.

website: A location on the World Wide Web that usually contains a home page, or the first document visitors see when they enter the site.
