Symposium and Exhibition
Undergraduates at St. Mary's are trying their hands at long-term research projects with great success. At the annual Research Symposium and Creative Activities Exhibition, undergraduate students from HSS, SET, and BGSB have the chance to present their findings and win awards based on projects they have been working on.
This event is a wonderful opportunity for our faculty and all of our students to enhance our heritage of academic excellence and encourage innovation in education by presenting various forms of scholarship. Students design posters describing their study or project, the resulting data and conclusions, just as researchers do at inter/national conferences. Professional 4' by 3' posters are printed at the Media Center (AIMC, basement of the library) for free (unless rush service). A powerpoint template is provided for the design of these posters (see sidebar links for this template and other symposium forms), and help is available from the AIMC staff. Professional poster stands were commissioned with the correct dimensions for these posters.
Besides the preparation and presentation of posters, the URO also carries out a competition in which students vie for monetary prizes. Judges from the St Mary's faculty score and rank the poster presentations. Three awards are given in each school, HSS, SET, and BGBS. Many thanks to Dean Dizinno, Dean Erevlles, and Dean Singh, for funding these prizes.
Registration for the symposium and application for the poster prizes are separate processes. Registration is carried out by on-line application form, which can be reached through the links at left. Application for the school poster prizes is done by submission of a separate application form and a miniature representation of the poster. The form is available through the links at left. NOTE: For a poster to be included in the symposium school award contest, it must be able to be produced from an electronic file. Winners will have their posters displayed in the glass case outside the URO in the academic year following their award.
The 13th Annual Research Symposium took place on April 13th. It was a big success.
The school award winners were: HSS: William Mabie, Ben Schweers, and NIna Olvera; SET: Erik Albach and Brian Arquisola, Dante Tezza, and the Patterson, Boyd, and Villarreal team; and BGBS, Angela Rizzo. Congratulations to these hard-working students.
