Connecting Your Game Consoles
Internet Connection Sharing
You may not be able to connect a game console directly to the St. Mary's University 802.1x authenticated network
until the game console includes 802.1x support. You may however be able to connect your game
console to the St. Mary's University 802.1x authenticated network through your laptop and a second Ethernet
adapter through the use of Internet Connection Sharing.
Requirements
Internet Connection Sharing requirements:
- The game console must have an Ethernet Port
- Your computer must have two Ethernet ports
- You must have an extra straight through or cross-over cable
Additional Ethernet ports can be added to your computer through USB, PCMCIA or ExpressCard. USB 2.0 to Ethernet 10/100 adapters are available for about $20 from sources like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com
There are two types of Ethernet cables; straight through and cross-over. The Ethernet cable used from your computer to the Ethernet jack on the wall is a straight through cable. You may need to purchase an Ethernet cross-over cable from a computer store if you are trying to connect the following devices:
- Xbox
- Play Station 2
- TiVo
Xbox 360, Play Station 3, or Nintendo Wii require a straight through Ethernet cable
To continue with the rest of the instructions please ensure that all available Service Packs and Updates are applied prior to selecting your current operating system from the links above.

Mac OS X 10.5
These instructions are provided without warranty and are only a suggestion as to how one might configure connection sharing
If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can share its connection with other computers on your local network.
For example, if your computer is connected to the Internet using a DSL modem and has an AirPort Card installed, you can share the
DSL connection with other AirPort-equipped computers.
On Windows computers, sharing your Internet connection is sometimes referred to as a "network bridge" or as "bridging your network."
To set up Internet sharing:
- Obtain a USB to Ethernet Adapter
- Connect to the STMU 802.1x authenticated port as you would normally, to connect to the internet
- Connect the new USB to Ethernet adapter to your mac
- Connect the game console to the new USB to Ethernet adapter with an Ethernet cable
- Choose Apple > System Preferences,
- Click Sharing
- Select Internet Sharing.
- Choose a network service from the "Share your connection from" pop-up menu, Ethernet for example.
- Select a networking service to share your Internet connection from the "To computers using" list, follow the prompts
- Make sure the IP Address of the USB-Ethernet adapter is set to 192.168.1.1 and the Subnet Mask is set to 255.255.255.0
- Set the Preferred DNS Server to 10.1.100.42 and the Alternate DNS Server to 10.2.100.42
If you share your Internet connection using AirPort, click AirPort Options and give your network a name and password.
If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (Ethernet, for example), investigate possible side
effects before you turn on Internet sharing. In some cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might
unintentionally affect the network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to
prevent you from disrupting their network.

Ubuntu Linux 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) and below
Connect the computer as you would normally and authenticate to the network
You cannot continue with these steps until you have installed a second Ethernet adapter and connected the Game Console
- Copy and paste the following command exactly to quickly check which network interface is connected to STMU network:
- You will need to set the 2nd interface, that will connect to the Game Console to a static IP address
- Click on the NETWORK MANAGER APPLET
- Click "Manual Configuration..."
- Click properties next to the interface that will connect to the Game Console. (This is NOT the interface you found in the previous step)
- In the properties window, uncheck "Enable roaming mode"
- Enter the following information:
- Configuration: Static IP Address
- IP Address: 192.168.0.1
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway Address: Leave blank
- You will either need to restart your computer or type the following command for the settings to take affect
- To make ICS easy, we recommend installing the Firestarter firewall program
- Go to APPLICATIONS
- Select ADD/REMOVE
- In the search box type "firestarter" (without the quotation marks)
- Check the box next to Firestarter.
- You can close Add/Remove when Firestarter has finished installing
- Open up Firestarter. It should be in Applications >> Internet >> Firestarter
- Select the interface you found in Step 1 for Detected Devices
- Check the box for IP ADDRESS IS ASSIGNED VIA DHCP
- Press Next
- Check the box for ENABLE INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING
- Select the interface that will connect to the Game Console
(This is NOT the interface you found in Step 1)
echo; ifconfig | egrep -B 1 '10.([0-9]{1,3}\.){2}[0-9]{1,3}' | egrep -o '[a-zA-Z]{1,10}[0-9]'; echo
Make a mental note of the name this command returns. It will most likely be something like "eth0"
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
On the first run you should be presented with the Firewall Wizard. Read through the information and click forward
In the Network Device Setup
In Internet Connection Sharing Setup
Now finish the Firestarter setup and start the Firewall. You may receive an error message (Firestarter is not perfect). However, as long as the Firewall starts you will be OK.
Internet Connection Sharing is now setup. The Xbox 360, Playstation 2 & 3 and TiVo, will need to use factory default settings for the setup of your network connection. We suggest using AUTOMATIC or DHCP settings if available.
For the Xbox (original), Playstation 2 and TiVo systems a CROSSOVER Ethernet cable is needed. (use a STRAIGHT-THROUGH cable for the other systems)
Ubuntu Linux (Hardy Heron, Intrepid Ibex, and Jaunty Jackalope):
