- 1. What is Ethernet?
- Ethernet is a protocol used for high speed wired connections.
- 2. How fast is a network connection?
- A wired connection is capable of supporting a dedicatd 10 or 100 Mbps while a wireless LAN connection will vary between 1 and 54 Mbps depending on a variety of factors to include such things as: network demand, distance from the access point, microwave ovens, 2.4GHz cordless phones, to name a few.
- 3. How do I know if I have an Ethernet card in my computer?
- There are two types of Ethernet cards. One is a separate card similar to a modem, but with only one, slightly larger jack. The other is built into your motherboard, in which case there would be an Ethernet port on the back of your computer close to the USB and Mouse/Keyboard connections. If you are uncertain, contact HelpDesk x4357.
- 4. Can I use a modem in the Residence Halls?
- Yes. You can use a modem in the residence halls with any dial-up service. You are responsible for all long distance charges.
- 5. If I am purchasing an Ethernet card what should I get?
- Any 10/100 Ethernet card should work. We recommend 3Com, NetGear, Linksys or Cisco from the bookstore.
- 6. If I get a pop up saying that my battery is reaching the end of its usable life what do I do?
- If the battery lasts less than 45 minutes idle then Dell will replace it after testing at Charles Francis. If it lasts longer than that, you can check the box to not display the message.
- 7. Are all cables for the Ethernet card the same?
- All Category-5 Ethernet cables are the same. However, crossover cables will not work.
- 8. What is a MAC address?
- A MAC address is a 12 digit number/letter code that identifies a network card.
- 9. How do I find my MAC address?
- To find your MAC address, in XP click the Start, select Run, type CMD and press the enter key. This will give you an DOS window where you can type the command
ipconfig /all. This process will reveal your MAC or hardware address. - 10. What jack do I choose in my room?
- The Ethernet/network jacks in the residence halls are orange and are slightly wider than a common telephone jack.
- 11. How do I get connected?
- Your StMU laptop comes to you preconfigured with an icon on the desktop. If your laptop is not configured follow the configuration guide found on the. Available Configurations
- 12. PPPOE requires a password; where do I get mine?
- Your PPPOE login and password is the same for Wireless LAN as well as email. If you don't have it, please visit the HelpDesk in the Charles Francis building Monday through Friday 8a-5p.
- 13. How do I get an IP address?
- Your IP address is automatically provided to you after you successfully connect to the network.
- 14. If I have no idea what to do after working through online help, will the HelpDesk assist me?
- Yes. You can visit the HelpDesk (x4357) in the Charles Francis building or visit the Academic Imaging and Media Center (AIMC) in the basement of the Academic Library where you can get hands on instruction on a variety of PC related subjects.
- 15. How do my roommate and I switch connections?
- You must BOTH disconnect and wait a few minutes before reconnecting as the switch remembers your MAC address for a few minutes and may not allow you to reconnect until it has cleared its table.
- 16. My Ethernet jack is cracked. What do I do?
- Report it to Residence Life.
- 17. Can I have multiple connections?
- No. Only one connection per person is available.
- 18. Can I connect my router/switch or any other device to the network?
- No. Each jack will only allow a computer.
- 19. Can I just plug my computer into any jack and have internet access?
- As long as your account is valid you may connect in any StMU network jack.
- 20. What do I do for my connection if I switch rooms?
- No adjustments are required.
