Get RecognizedHow to Form an OrganizationStarting a new organization on campus can be a great experience. Not only do you get to develop an interest or an idea in a brand-new way at St. Mary’s, but you can learn leadership skills that will help you in the classroom and in the workplace. And Campus Activities is right there to help you make your mark. First, connect with other students who are excited about your idea, and who have the dedication to develop a mission statement for your new organization. Make sure that you’re not trying to do something that’s already being done on campus. For example, if you’re trying to start a political organization, your goals might be better met by joining a current political organization, like the Student Government Association. It’s often better to add your enthusiasm and ideas to something that's already established, than to divide resources. Second, meet with someone in Campus Activities. Once you’ve developed a mission statement and found other students willing to start the organization with you, you’ll need to fill out paperwork and be aware of certain policies. In their meetings with you, Karlos and the Student Organization Specialists (SOS) will walk you step-by-step through the whole process, and make sure you’ve got the tools to build a strong organization. See below to download an Intent to Organize form, a Sample Constitution, and an Application for Recognition. |
