The Student Government Association has achieved success in many of the initiatives set forth at the beginning of the academic year. Some initiatives require more than legislative action, and so the Student Government Association will sponsor events in order to raise awareness on such initiatives. SGA also has planned and sponsored events that align with the mission of St. Mary's University in order to promote Marianist Ideals and improve the general experience of Students.
Study Abroad Proposal
In the Fall of 2009, President Tania Ramirez and Executive Vice President James Eades began to investigate an older proposal that had not passed. This proposal implements a $10 fee on Undergraduate Full-Time Student Tuition that will be directed towards a fund dedicated to study abroad scholarships. After researching and promoting the idea of the Scholarship Fund, President Ramirez presented the Proposal and a petition from the students to the Budget Committee. After some minor modifications and clarifications on details, the Proposal was passed by both the Budget Committee and the Board of Trustees.
Burgers With the Brothers
This event has been a tradition in SGA, and continues to be successful and fun! At the beginning of each year, SGA sponsors this event with the assistance of the Marianist Brothers to promote interaction with the large community of Brothers at St. Mary's. This event provides students the opportunity to interact with brothers and enjoy something that all college students love - free food.
Breakfast With the President
SGA leadership has ample opportunity to meet with the University's President. This specific event provides ten randomly selected students the chance to speak with the President of St. Mary's University over breakfast. This promotes an open discussion of the problems, concerns and successes in the University that might not be apparent to administration, faculty, and staff.
Dinner with the Deans
In an effort to increase the interaction between students and the Deans at St. Mary's, Student Government Association sponsored dinners for each dean on campus. On these nights, a group of students from the respective school was invited to have dinner with their Dean and have the opportunity to get to know them in a more intimate setting.
Pub Night
For years students at St. Mary's University have called for the return of the Pub, an establishment that has been missing from St. Mary's for some time. In order to answer this call, the Student Government Association has worked in conjunction with Aramark Dining Services in order to provide a pub-like atmosphere to test the possibility of bringing back the pub. The next Pub Night is scheduled for Sept. 30th 2010 6-9pm.
Honor Code
St. Mary's University, a Marianist institution of higher education, strives to instill in its students the Marianist concepts of faith, scholarship, service, leadership and education. In line with these concepts, the Honor Code requires St. Mary's University students to strive for the maximum degree of integrity, honesty and ethics in their academic lives and encourage all members of the community to act in an equivalent manner. Infractions upon the Honor Code will be dealt with justly according to the processes of the standing St. Mary's University Student Code of Conduct.
