Can You Spare Some Social Change?

Monday – Thursday:
Alumni Oyster Bake Homecoming Food Drive
1:00 – 4:00pm, Holy Rosary Catholic Church
St. Mary’s RSOs will have the opportunity to compete for the titles of Homecoming King and Queen by helping the San Antonio Food Bank fill their shelves and provide food for hungry families across San Antonio.
 
Monday:
United Farm Workers Lecture
12:30 - 1:30pm, UC-A
Arturo Rodriguez, President of the United Farm Workers of America, will speak about this year’s theme of “Sí Se Puede, Yes We Can!”  Lecture focus will be on the importance of civic engagement and community service, and the impact it can have on the world, with relation to Cesar Chavez and President Obama. 
 
City Council District 7 Candidate Forum
7:00pm, AT&T Information and Technology Center
Co-sponsored by Phi Alpha Delta fraternity
The three candidates for the District 7 City Council seat will be asked a variety of questions relating to issues in the upcoming election.
 
Tuesday:
“What Matters to Us” Public Service Announcements
5:00 – 11:00pm, The Outback
In cooperation with Battle of the Bands
Each band participating in the battle will speak briefly between songs about a cause that is important to them. The Service Learning Center will have a table with information about each of the causes mentioned, along with resources to help students get engaged and help create systemic change in these fields.
     
Wednesday:
Government and Not For Profit Career Expo
1:00 – 4:00pm, UC-A
An opportunity to network with representatives from more than 20 agencies in the government and not for profit sectors.
 
“Am I a Public Servant?” Discussion Panel
 4:30 – 5:30pm, Alkek 104
A panel of public service representatives will share volunteer, internship, and career options.  Agencies  represented include Texas Parks & Wildlife, Teach for America, the Texas Attorney General – Child Support Division, the Department of Veteran Affairs, and the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance.
 
Thursday:
Taking a Ride Through Change
4:00 – 6:00pm, City of San Antonio
A guided tour through the Westside of San Antonio designed to increase awareness amongst student participants of the potential impact their involvement in community initiatives can have on the positive evolution and/or “change” of a city. Tour visit sites include The Neighborhood Place, American Sunrise, SAMMinistries, and the Haven for Hope Project.
 
Friday:
Career Services and Service Learning Centers Homecoming Oyster Bake Open House
4:30 – 6:30pm, Center for Life Directions Building
The university community is invited to network with alumni and learn about services and programs provided by both centers in order to become involved in the community, both local and global.
