Faculty & StaffThe Service Learning Center supports faculty who incorporate the pedagogy of service-learning into the curriculum for existing courses. The SLC also supports faculty who seek to develop new service-learning courses to offer to the students. Service-learning, at its most basic, allows for the students to apply the theories taught in the classroom in a real world setting. It should be noted, however, that service-learning is a component, not the foundation, of the course. It serves to help bring to life the learning objectives of the course, but not be the main focus. As with any service project, reflection should especially be a key component with service-learning. The Service Learning Center can support faculty in developing effective strategies in incorporating reflection with the curriculum. With all service-learning courses, there will be reciprocity for all stakeholders involved. Students, faculty, and community partners - each in their own unique way - will certainly be giving their time, talent, energy, and creativity to the process; in return, they will have learned issues affecting a certain population, the systemic issues of the larger community, time management, application and better retention of learning objectives, among other important skills and assets.
