Message from the Dean

On behalf of the students, faculty, staff, and administration, I welcome you to the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) at St. Mary’s University. We invite you to browse our site and explore SET’s quality programs that are designed to provide you with a competitive advantage as you enter the workforce or continue your education through graduate or professional studies.

Small class sizes, hands-on learning, personal attention from our superbly qualified and dedicated faculty and staff, and close ties to the professional community are hallmarks of our school. Our Marianist, Catholic heritage and approach to education focuses on excellence within your discipline and your development as a whole person. This student-centered, service-oriented environment will call upon you to analyze problems as a combination of scientific inquiry within the framework of moral and ethical considerations.

Our programs include a National Institutes of Health-funded program designed to introduce minority students into careers in the sciences. The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) U*STAR Program supports the education of the next generation of biomedical research scientists. This program extends beyond the biology major and includes undergraduate students in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and engineering. While some of the students conduct research off campus, other students are part of research teams and work hand-in-hand with St. Mary’s faculty.

St. Mary’s University has a number of articulation agreements with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio to help qualified undergraduate students gain entry into allied health, dental, medical and pharmacy programs. St. Mary’s University is also a participating university in the Joint Admission Medical Program. Historically, more than 50 percent of St. Mary’s graduates who apply are accepted into American medical and dental schools, exceeding the national average of 35 percent.

Our graduates are in high demand by the country’s top graduate and professional schools, as well as regional and national research firms. As a SET graduate from St. Mary’s University, you will be poised to meet the challenges of rapidly-advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields - a priority for our nation to successfully compete, prosper, and be secure in the global community.

These are exciting times in the School of Science, Engineering, Technology, and I look forward to sharing this journey with you. We welcome your participation and support in our activities – as a current or prospective student, alumnus, educational or corporate partner, or friend of the school. Please feel free to contact me if I may personally be of any assistance to you.

With best wishes,

Winston F. Erevelles, Ph.D.

Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology
Professor of Engineering
