Outside Art
by Brother Cletus Behlmann, S.M.

While a student brother, there seemed to be a dearth of art on the St. Mary’s campus. Two bronze statues stood in the Quadrangle, and in 1954 the pillar with the statue of Mary was erected at the school’s front entrance.

During the summer of 1960, Brothers Xavier Hargett, Charles Martens and I were resident slaves for Brother Mel Meyer, S.M. A large army surplus tent, pitched behind Charles Francis Hall, was home to Meyer’s many art projects.

Several works from that summer remain, including the bas relief near the loading dock of the library and the three men in the fiery furnace at the steps of Treadaway Hall.

When the Marianist residence was completed, sculptor Charles Umlaff created the cast stone pieta above the chapel’s main altar.

Then in the early 1990s, metal sculptures blossomed on campus—Meyer’s work again. Near the library is the largest sculpture, this by San Antonio artist Larry Graeber, which some say resembles orange slices leaning against each other.

I created works of art for the University Center, which opened in 1992. Above the central stairway hangs a large metal sculpture mobile; a handmade paper mobile with 85 circles dangles from a brass hanger above the entrance; and many other works of art can be found throughout the building. Pieces by Art Professor Sharon McMahon and me can be found around campus.

A Rattler bronze sculpture, which sits near the entrance of the Alumni Athletics & Convocation Center, was commissioned by the Class of 2000. Perhaps in the years ahead more visual art works will beautify the campus for all to enjoy.
